The last decade has seen a huge resurgence in bed bug infestations. The number of reported incidents in New York City rose from 500 in 2004 to 10,000 in 2009, but its not just the big cities being affected. We've been getting calls from all over the metro area, from single-family homes in Lawrenceville, to apartment complexes in Dunwoody and gated communities in Alpharetta. Bed bugs can happen to anybody anywhere. So here are some tips on how to avoid a bed bug infestation in your home:

1. Know how to identify a bed bug. Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown with a flat, oval body that measures approximately ¼ of an inch (6.35 mm) long. Newly hatched bed bugs are translucent and 1mm long.

2.Check for bed bugs before unpacking during a trip away from home. Change rooms or hotels immediately if you see any evidence of bed bugs.

3.Take care of bed bugs that may have hitched a ride on clothing.Separate laundry into plastic bags so the clothes can be placed directly in the washer without bugs escaping. Wash and dry the clothes on the highest setting that the fabric can withstand or take items to the dry cleaners.Undress on a hard surface floor rather than on carpet if you suspect bed bugs are on your clothing. Bed bugs do not travel on people like lice do. Wipe off the floor to capture any bed bugs that fall off the clothes.

4.Take care when bringing used furniture and clothing into your house. Wash clothing immediately. Furniture, however, should be inspected carefully before even bringing it into your home.

Taking these precautions can go a long way to keeping bed bugs out of your home. If you find yourself with bed bugs, despite all your efforts, there's no need to panic.

At Alternative Pest Control we pride ourselves on our ability to eliminate infestations quickly and without breaking the bank. While many companies regularly charge $600/room, we do the job for $200/room or less.

Please look at those contracts. They have exemptions for just about every conceivable way that insects can damage your home. They may occasionally replace a window frame here and there, if the customer really makes a fuss, but when it comes to damage in the thousands, they leave the homeowner high and dry.

Once you get a good look at their contracts take a look at ours. This is the whole thing copied and pasted from our damage bond:

" This guarantee is issued to the above owner and any subsequent owners of the listed property address after a subterranean termite treatment.
The guarantee shall remain in force for one year, and is renewable for at least 10 years upon receipt of the renewal fee on or before each anniversary of the original date of issuance,
Should a subterranean termite infestation appear while this guarantee is in effect, Alternative Pest Control, Inc. will treat that infestation at no additional charge to the property owner.
Should any new damage from subterranean termites be discovered while this guarantee is in effect, that damage will be repaired at no charge to the property owner. APC will also pay the property owner two times the original treatment cost in cash for the inconvenience.
AP.C. must be notified of the damage, by the property owner, and have an opportunity to inspect the area before repairs are made.
Live termites must be found to classify as new damage.
Damage existing prior to treatment whether visible or hidden is not covered under this guarantee. Any area of known existing damage is not covered under the damage guarantee until that area is repaired, Alternative Pest Control, Inc. will need to inspect the repaired area while it is still accessible.
The property owner shall be responsible for notifying Alternative Pest Control of any structural alterations made during the contract period.
Any structural changes or additions to the structure that are not depicted in the attached graph will not be covered under the guarantee until they have been treated by Alternative Pest Control. This treatment or re-treatment will be at an additional fee to the property owner.
Our annual renewal fees are below average because we have such low claims ratio and we guarantee that they will always remain below industry average."

THAT'S IT... NO LEGAL JARGON... NO FINE PRINT... JUST A PROMISE TO DO WHATS RIGHT.

Check out this news story from 11 alive:

ATLANTA -- Mosquitoes have invaded metro Atlanta and the biggest worry is West Nile Virus.

Health officials say the first mosquito infected with the disease has just been reported in DeKalb County, but so far nobody has been infected. The vigilance continues as heat and rain are making metro Atlanta the ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Forget big lakes, ponds and creeks, all it takes is standing water in a small bottle cap to produce hundreds of mosquitoes.

And that means all out war by health officials, mosquito control companies and homeowners to get the jump on the mosquito invasion.
