A Business Built On A Solid Foundation.
Hello, my name is Gary Simmons the President of Alternative Pest Control, Inc. I want to share with you the history of (APC).
My wife, Vickie, and I were married in 1980. We went to Florida for our honeymoon and ended up moving there. A friend from church was retiring from her pest control route and asked me to take it over. I agreed and began to learn as much as I could about pest control. I enjoyed many aspects of pest control: the freedom of setting my own hours, meeting new people and developing relationships with them. My route grew very quickly and I soon had more work than I could do by myself.
In 1986, I got the opportunity to move to back to my home state of Georgia. At that time, Gwinnett County was the fastest growing county in the country. So we moved to Lawrenceville, not knowing where we would live or how to start a business. We just prayed and stepped out in faith.
I had an uncle (Joe Davis) living in Lawrenceville and gave him a call when we arrived in town. It just so happened that Uncle Joe had a house that we could live in rent-free. It was built in 1906 and was right off the square. It needed a lot of restoration, but we had the time and skills to do the work.
To build a customer base, I walked the neighborhoods around town talking to as many people as possible. I heard a recurring theme. People were not happy with the status quo in pest control, which in 1986 was monthly pest control, take it or leave it. Also, most companies were using Dursban inside homes, which left a strong and lasting odor.
Florida was a good training ground for pest control and I had learned a lot. I planned to use those Florida methods with my new clients in Georgia, offering a true alternative to the status quo.
We concentrated more on treating the outside of the home or office, which keeps pests from coming in, and we offered every other month and quarterly treatments. We also used odorless and effective chemicals that were very low in toxicity. The seed customers that I met walking door-to-door began talking to neighbors and friends. By the second year, I had to hire my first employee to help service the new customers. Since that time, by the Grace of God, APC has continued to grow, slowly but surely. For over 20 years, we have been running our business on Christian principles, honoring God in our work.
Currently, we have four general pest control routes and a termite control business that I personally supervise. As we look back over the years, we see how God has prospered us and blessed the many hours of hard work. Many thanks also to our loyal customers who have trusted us with their pest control needs and referred us to others
